Name: Doug Duinink
Occupation: Journey Pipe Welder for Local 33
Please introduce yourself and explain why you are running for mayor. My name is Doug Duinink. I have proudly spent the past 6 years serving the great city of Monroe as Mayor. I am a proud veteran who is an active member of American Legion # 363, a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, Preston Masonic Lodge and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. I am married and have two songs in college. Over the years, I have enjoyed attending many PCM sporting events and always drive a bus to support the PCM community in my spare time.
I am running for mayor because I believe the community of Monroe deserves a chance to grow, prosper and prosper! I have enjoyed working with past and present board members as it takes a lot of opinions and perspectives to make this city a place where not only the community grows, but families want to come and live in a family environment. I am proud to say that Monroe is a caring community.
I believe that some of the main issues facing municipal government are the constant need for infrastructure, such as replacing old water and sewer lines, while continuing to repair and replace city streets. Over the years I have been involved in many water, sewer and street projects, but the most recent was the $ 3.6 million Lagoon Sewer Project.
I believe in taking care of our very dedicated local police and fire department by providing the means to make our community as safe as possible
As a long-time member of this community, my vision for growth in Monroe is to help make every opportunity possible for local families and businesses.
In my opinion, the best part of Monroe is the community engagement and respect we show each other every day. Whether it’s a neighbor, a friend or a business in need, we as a community are always here to help.
I have enjoyed the past six years of service to this great community and look forward to striving in the years to come. My main goal is to make Monroe the best community in the state of Iowa as mayor. I would appreciate your vote on November 2.
Name: Gale Perrin
Please introduce yourself and explain why you are running for mayor. My name is Gale Perrin, I met Paula Hewitt 40 years and six months ago and I married her 40 years ago. We chose to live in Monroe because that’s where Paula grew up, and I’m not a fan of big city life. I made Monroe my home and love this place, it’s a geographic oddity, 15 minutes from everything and a fantastic community. I was involved in youth football from the start, I coached for 8 years, I also coached little league baseball for 2 years, I coached women’s softball for 2 years, I have been a Cub leader for 2 years, I was president of the Committee of the old settlers 1 year, helped with Awanas, served on the board of the Methodist church, I carried out a whole neighborhood restoration project and I is currently restoring 2 old buildings in the square without any use of taxpayer money.
First and foremost, I’m running for mayor because I feel like I need to do something more for Monroe. I’m not running against Doug Duinink, we’re friends, and more than anything I’m running to give him a break lol. But seriously, I would like to explore replacing the municipal part of property taxes with a local option sales tax, I think property tax is bordering on immoral. We do not have a say every two years in the tax assessment of our property. It is a negative tax in that it deters people from making improvements to their properties and NO ONE SHOULD BE TAXED OUTSIDE THE HOUSE THEY OWN !! And when it comes to people saying poor people or tenants don’t pay property taxes, I say nonsense! It’s included in their rent. While traveling in Iowa, I come across cities that have a bustling public square, and my goal is to do what I can to bring this kind of activity to our place. And to encourage the companies that people WANT to do business with with the people in the place now, these are great companies that deserve our business. We should be thankful that they chose our city to prosper and give them our patronage.
I also want to take over the recreation park project, it looks like this ball was dropped, let’s finish the walking path, pave the parking lot and where did the idea of ââa paddling pool go. And finally, I want to be available for a monthly coffee with the Mayor.
One of the best qualities of this city is that we can have disagreements one day and tomorrow we are still friends. I love the unique opportunities that are available in this city, it’s fun to see those opportunities come true. While I want to see Monroe grow up, I never want to see him become like Norwalk or Waukee. They are great communities, but they have exploded, with a huge increase in their property taxes. I prefer to see steady growth rather than explosive growth. So please help me give my buddy Doug a break on November 2nd by voting for me for mayor.
